Lendl was such a beast….he played against the greatest competition of all time and beat them all….started against Borg, Connors, McEnroe….middle was Wilander, Edberg, Becker, Cash…ended with Sampras,Courier, Stich, Muster….. Federer and Nadal NEVER had to play against such competition and such variety….Lendl is easily in the discussion of best of all time
It is also customary on the internet to reply to someone when you want to say something that is relevant to them. Otherwise you are just being an idiot. Are you an idiot?
this is totally incorrect. his mother used to be in sports as well and was a big influence in him to play. he was playing as a child. see lendl’s biography on youtube and you will see pics of him playing as a kid. there’s no way you can start playing at seventeen and be no.1
…oh and add it the fact that, as you mention, Lendl could rip the cover off the ball at anytime he chose to…
…also…Lendl really didn’t like Agassi. “A forehand and a haircut.” is all he said once when somebody asked for his thoughts on Agassi! Another time he said it made him sick that a person could be a well-behaved, polite, great player and be called “boring” (referring to Sampras), while agassi got accolades. He said he’d want kids to grow up to be like Sampras!
That is essentially true. Lendl relied on his superior consistency, and that just sort of wore down the young Agassi….who couldn’t blast winners past Lendl for an entire match. On top of that, Lendl was stronger and fitter, AND had the superior serve. Agassi had a better return, and could take the ball much earlier, but those assets didn’t help much against Lendl.
Incidently, when he finally beat Lendl, it wasn’t until 1992. I have the match on tape. Agassi had just won Wimbledon, and was very confident, Lendl had just returned from yet another back injury problem, and was rusty. Even then it went 3 sets.
The Stadium court of 1989 is now known as the Louis Armstrong Court. The main stadium court, where finals are played today, is the Arthur Ashe Court. It opened in 1997.
Agassi just wasnt willing to play to the level of legitimate, percentage tennis in those days. Lendl epitomized “legitomacy” in tennis. No frills, nothing fancy. Just get the ball back and smack the hell out of it once in a while to keep the guy on his toes. Thats was Lendl’s recipe for success.
incredible that agassi came with a bang on the tour, winning quite a lot but could not beat lendl in 5 tries up to this point. this shows the greatness of lendl. he was a fucking monster. this made it 0-6.

Lendle was probably the most fit tennis player at the time. I read he fittness trained hard off season and it shows how fast and agile he is here.

damn the noise of those airplanes flying above are so annoying. I could imagine how nerve racking it could be for those players.
