Andy Roddick has defeated the British superstar Andy Murray in a Miami Tennis Cup match on Saturday. Roddick won the match in the straight sets by 6-2, 6-3. With this victory, Roddick has made his way into the finals where he will take on Nicolas Almagro of Spain.
Murray who is currently the no. 3 player in the world had come into this match as favourite, but, he was thrashed by the recently retired American veteran.
Roddick kept Murray under pressure throughout the match and never let him settle down. He broke Murray’s service twice in the first set and won it comfortably by 6-2.
The second set was a bit more competitive. The first seven games of the second set went with the serve and Roddick was ahead by 4-3 at the end of the seventh game. Murray didn’t manage to hold his service in the eighth game and got trailed by 3-5. Roddick served out the next game easily and wrapped up the match.
In the post match interview, Murray said, “Roddick is still a wonderful player. It’s not easy to compete against him when he is in this kind of form. He served beautifully and was better than me today.”
“I was surprised when Roddick announced his retirement. I believe there is still a lot of tennis left in him. He can still perform well at the highest level.”
On the other hand, Roddick looked quite happy after securing victory in the match. He said, “I really admire Murray as a player. He is one of the best in the world at the moment. Before the match, I hadn’t thought that I would win the match this easily. But, fortunately, he was not at his best today which made the life easier for me.”
Andy Roddick has defeated Milos Raonic of Canada in an exhibition match played at Air Canada Centre on Friday. Roddick won the match by 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Roddick who has recently announced his retirement from professional tennis had to work hard for this victory. The Canadian youngster lost the first set, but, he didn’t give up and bounced back. However, he wasn’t able to hold his nerves towards the end of the final set and ended up losing the match.
In the first set, Raonic didn’t have a very good start. He held his service in the first game, but, after that, he lost three games consecutively. Roddick got a breakthrough in the third game and he served out the next game. At the end of the fourth game, the score card was showing 3-1 in Roddick’s favour. Roddick kept the lead till the end of the set and won the set by 6-4.
But, in the second set, Raonic bounced back. In the first six games, both the players held their service. Raonic got a breakpoint in the seventh game and the local boy grabbed that opportunity with both hands. He broke Roddick’s service and then, held his service in the next game to enhance his lead to 5-3. Roddick reduced Raonic’s lead to 5-4 with a serve hold in the ninth game. The American needed a breakthrough in the 10th game to extend the set, but, he didn’t manage to do so and lost the set.
In the third and final set, there was close competition between the two players and the set went into the tie breaker. Raonic couldn’t soak the pressure towards the end and made quite a few mistakes which helped Roddick in winning the tie breaker and thus, the match as well.
Andy Roddick’s countryman, Ryan Harrison, has been defeated by Feliciano Lopez of Spain in the first round of the China Open 2012. Lopez won the match by 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-2. In the first couple of sets, both the players gave each other a tough fight. But, in the final set, it was all about Lopez. The Spaniard just outclassed Harrison in the third set and knocked him out of the tournament. Lopez took 2 hours and 10 minutes to win the match.
Lopez was off to a terrific start in the match. He broke Harrison’s service in the third game and then, further enhanced the lead by holding his service in the next game. At the end of the fourth game, the score was 3-1 in the favour of Lopez. But, the Spaniard didn’t manage to keep the lead till the end of the set. His service was broken in the sixth game and the scores were levelled. There were no breakthroughs in the next 6 games and the set went into the tie breaker. Lopez didn’t give any chance to Harrison in the tie breaker and won the first set.
In the second set, both the players made a decent start. There were no breakthroughs in the first 10 games and the scores were levelled at 5-5. Harrison got a breakpoint in the 11th game and he didn’t miss that chance. He latched on it to make the score 6-5. He served out the next game easily to win the second set by 7-5.
In the final set, both the players held their service in the first four games and the scores were levelled at 2-2. But, after that, it was Lopez all the way. The Spaniard won the last four games in a row to finish off the match.
In the second round, Lopez will face Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan.
Andy Roddick has been defeated by Steve Darcis of Belgium in the third round of the Winston Salem Open. Darcis won the match in the straight sets by 7-6(6), 7-6(3). Roddick, who has been given 5th seed in this competition, made Darcis work hard for each and every point. But, the Belgian player held his nerves in both the tie breakers and stopped Roddick from going further into the tournament. Roddick was very good on his service and smashed 8 aces in the match. But, He didn’t manage to play the return shots well.
Both the players played well in the first set. There was no breakthrough in the first 12 games and the scores were tied at 6-6. The set went into the tie breaker in which the Belgian player proved to be a bit better than Roddick. The story of the second set is not different from the first one. Both the players held their entire serves in the second set as well. Roddick had got a breakpoint in the second set, but, he wasn’t able to capitalize on that. Roddick failed to deliver in the tie breaker again and allowed Darcis to run away with the game.
In the post match interview, Roddick said that he is satisfied with the way he served in the match, but, he didn’t play his backhand shots well which proved to be costly. On the other hand, Darcis, who secured a berth in the quarterfinals with this victory, was delighted after defeating Roddick. Darcis said that he tried to play with aggression right from the start and that paid off. In the quarter final, Darcis will play against Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic who cruised into the quarterfinals with an easy victory over Jarkko Nieminen.
Andy Roddick has been defeated in the second round of the men’s singles tennis tournament of London Olympics by Novak Djokovic. The Serbian superstar defeated Roddick in the straight sets by 6-2, 6-1. This year hasn’t been good for Roddick so far. His performances in the three Grand Slams this year were pretty average. His fans were expecting him to flourish in the Olympics, but, Roddick has disappointed his fans by giving another bad performance. Djokovic defeated Roddick in just 54 minutes.
Roddick is a brilliant player on the grass court and he has always performed brilliantly in Wimbledon. He has been in the finals of Wimbledon three times before. So, people were expecting this match to be a close one. But, that didn’t happen and the match was completely one sided. Djokovic attacked Roddick right from the outset. He broke the service of Roddick in the sixth game of the first set and took a lead of 4-2. After that blow, Roddick was not able to come back into the match. In the second set, Djokovic broke the service of Roddick twice (in the second game and the sixth game). Roddick is renowned in the world for his powerful service, but, his service was wonderfully controlled by Djokovic. Djokovic fired a total of 14 aces in the match.
After the match, Roddick said that he played well in the match, but, it was hard to control Djokovic. He played brilliantly from the baseline. On being asked about the retirement, Roddick answered that he is not thinking about the retirement at the moment. He can still play quality tennis at the top level and it is not the right time to think about retirement. On the other hand, Djokovic was pretty happy to move into the third round. In the third round, Djokovic will play against the former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt.
The American pair of Venus Williams and Serena Williams have won the Gold medal in the women’s tennis doubles competition of London Olympics. The Williams sisters defeated the Czech pair of Lucie Hradecka and Andrea Hlavackova. This is the third Gold medal for the Williams sisters in the Olympics. The Williams sisters won the match in the straight sets by 6-4, 6-4. The American pair hit a total of 17 winners in the match and didn’t let the Czech players settle into their groove.
The Williams sisters got the breakthrough in the very first game of the match. The American pair served out the next game to make the score 2-0.
