WILLIAMS PLAYING AT THE CIRCLE CUP

The 40th Family Circle Cup Championships (starting from March 31) will see both the Williams sister participating in the tournament. After Venus announced earlier this month that she will be participating in the tournament, Serena too has given her nod to be a part of the event. Both Venus and Serena are past champions of the tournament. While Venus won the title in 2004, Serena emerged champion in 2008.

2008 was Serena’s last appearance at Family Cup Tennis Center. Serena is one of the most decorated tennis women players and has 13 major titles under her belt. She said that she is returning to mark the 40th anniversary of the event – an event that she loved as a novice tennis player, and gave her many great moments.

Its quite a coup for the Circle Cup – Serena has been ranked the world no 1 in singles on 5 occasions by the Women’s Tennis Association.

RODDICK STUMBLES OUT

Andy Roddick failed to save his grace as he bowed to seventh seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa for 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4. In spite of picking up a mid-point momentum during the match, Roddick could not pull off a win at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.

4th seeded Roddick seemed outpaced, with right hamstring and right ankle injuries. According to the lanky American, he played well enough to win the game but his average serves might have brought him down. However, there seemed too many mistakes from Roddick’s side as he struggled to win the second tie-breaker. Roddick was out of place with 9-8 during the tiebreaker failing to win his first serve and even found his backhand hit the net.

This year has not started well for Roddick. Anderson looked well in form saving 3 match points for the very first time in his career. While speaking at the conference Anderson stated how he deserved to win. The match was a well-fought battle. There were some exciting moments in the game when Roddick tried coming back into the game in the 3rd set.

Anderson now faces top-seed John Isner in the semifinals. This will be a game of two rivals who have met before with the South African winning in their last encounter at the Sony Ericsson Open 2011. Isner came into the semifinals winning an easy 6-3, 6-2 over eighth-seed Bernard Tomic of Australia.

Isner is rated to have an upper hand over Anderson at the tournament for his fine form. During his match with Tomic, Isner won four games at love. Although the game looked easy, Isner seemed making perfect moves from the beginning of the game.

RODDICK RELISHING COMEBACK

United States of America tennis veteran Andy Roddick is well on course to making his much awaited comeback at the SAP Open in San Jose, although according to the player himself, he hasn’t hit a tennis ball since he hurt his right hamstring in the second round encounter in the Australian Open.

Speaking to reporters on a conference call, Roddick stated that an MRI scan done on his hamstring showed that he had a partial tear in the tendon, which he suffered during the match against Lleyton Hewitt on the 19th of January.

Roddick, who will be turning 30 years old this year, injured his hamstring in the second set of his match against the former world number one, which forced him to take a medical time out. He managed to pull together another 16 games before retiring from the match. Since then, Andy Roddick has been sidelined and did not even hit the gym till just a few days back.

But he is confident that he can pull through and hit the courts at San Jose for the SAP Open where he is scheduled to play his first match on the 15th of February. After this tournament, Roddick is scheduled to play at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis and a good run of form at San Jose would give him the chance to notch up his 600th career appearance at Memphis, a tournament which gave him his 30th career singles title just last year.

However, the only concern that Andy Roddick has at the moment is the fact that he has not hit a ball since returning from Australia and he feels that he might be a bit rusty at the beginning of the tournament but feels that a good run will improve his streak in the tournament.

RODDICK STUMBLES OUT

Andy Roddick stumbled out of the Australian Open in just the second round after being forced to retire with a leg injury. He was in the midst of a match with home favourite Lleyton Hewitt but after continuing on with the injury for nearly two sets, both of which were lost by the American, he called it a day.

Roddick is the 15th seed this year, and was not expected to have much trouble finishing off the former world number one Hewitt, and for a period he seemed to be well on his way to fulfilling this expectation. He took the first set with relative ease, winning it 6-3 in just 39 minutes.

Early in the second set however, he stumbled during a point and appeared to strain something in his leg. The American received treatment at 0-3 down in the second set, but gamely played on for as long as he could. He was clearly struggling, and the second set went to the Australian 6-3, who could see the weakness in his opponent and reacted by making Andy move as much as he could.

The third set was a similar story, again won 6-4 by Hewitt, whose dogged approach and tireless energy were beginning to wear down his injured opposition. At the end of this set, Roddick approached the umpire to confirm that he couldn’t continue, and the match was Hewitt’s. The home crowd must have enjoyed the unlikely result as they saw their champion progress, but would have enjoyed seeing the match won in a more satisfying manner.

RODDICK TEAMS UP WITH SERENA

Andy Roddick and Serena Williams will be playing in the mixed doubles of the 2012 Australian Open, scheduled to start this month.

The younger of the Williams sisters posted on her Twitter page saying that she would indeed be partnering her friend, Andy Roddick in the upcoming Grand Slam event. They both announced last year that they would be practicing together for the 2012 London Olympics.

Serena hasn’t taken part in the mixed doubles event since 2008, when she played with Mardy Fish in the Hopman Cup. She won the Australian Open a total of five times and has won 13 Grand Slams in total, which make her an enviable partner and a formidable opponent. She used to play extensively in mixed doubles events, early in her career, with great success. She won the 1998 US Open and the Wimbledon playing with Max Mirnyi of Belarus.

Andy Roddick has been out of the mixed doubles scene for even longer than his partner. The last mixed doubles event he played in was in 2001 in Wimbledon. He has never played in a mixed doubles event outside of a Grand Slam tournament, so it will be interesting to watch him play the mixed doubles event.
